</p><p>In <a href="https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bahir_Dar" class="extiw" title="w:Bahir Dar">Bahir Dar</a>, de hoofdstad van <a href="https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amhara_(regio)" class="extiw" title="w:Amhara (regio)">Amhara</a>, een regio in het noordwesten van <a href="/wiki/Categorie:Ethiopi%C3%AB" title="Categorie:Ethiopië">Ethiopië</a>, is zaterdag 22 juni een mislukte staatsgreep gepleegd. Daarbij zijn tientallen doden gevallen, onder wie enkele hooggeplaatste functionarissen zoals het hoofd van het leger, de regiopresident en de regionale openbare aanklager. Een dag na de staatsgreep vielen bij aanvallen op dorpen in de aangrenzende regio <a href="https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benishangul-Gumuz" class="extiw" title="w:Benishangul-Gumuz">Benishangul-Gumuz</a> nog eens tientallen doden, mogelijk meer dan 50. De daders zaten vermoedelijk in hetzelfde kamp als de coupplegers.
</p><p>Generaal Asamnew Tsige, degene die geldt als de hoofdverantwoordelijke voor de staatsgreep, is afgelopen maandag zelf gedood door veiligheidstroepen. Inmiddels zijn er bandopnames opgedoken die zijn gemaakt een dag voor de staatsgreep, waarop naar verluidt zijn stem is te horen. In een telefoongesprek kondigt de generaal de staatsgreep aan.
</p><p>In de nasleep van de staatsgreep zijn meer dan 250 mensen gearresteerd.

</p><p>Op een plein in de Ethiopische hoofdstad <a href="https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Addis_Abeba" class="extiw" title="w:Addis Abeba">Addis Abeba</a> is vandaag tijdens een politieke massabijeenkomst waar zich tienduizenden mensen hadden verzameld een aanslag gepleegd op <a href="https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abiy_Ahmed" class="extiw" title="w:Abiy Ahmed">Abiy Ahmed</a>, die sinds enkele maanden de premier van Ethiopië is. De premier stond op het podium en was net klaar met een toespraak, toen er een <a href="https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/granaat" class="extiw" title="w:granaat">granaat</a> ontplofte.
</p><p>Ahmed zelf bleef ongedeerd en werd meteen in veiligheid gebracht. Door de ontploffing vielen echter twee doden en meer dan 150 gewonden, onder wie 10 zwaargewonden. Eerder waren er geruchten over meer doden, die echter niet lijken te kloppen. De premier sprak later op de staatstelevisie van een een "goed georkestreerde aanslag".
</p><p>Er gaan geruchten over een man die na het gebeurde in elkaar werd geslagen en vervolgens naar het ziekenhuis zou zijn gebracht. Inmiddels zijn negen politiemedewerkers gearresteerd, onder wie het plaatsvervangend hoofd van de politie.

</p><p><b>Zeker een half jaar noodtoestand in Ethiopië</b>
</p><p>De <a href="https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/noodtoestand" class="extiw" title="w:noodtoestand">noodtoestand</a> die gisteren in Ethiopië werd afgekondigd blijft minimaal het komende halfjaar van kracht, heeft minister van Defensie Siraj Fegessa (<a href="https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/en:Siraj_Fegessa" class="extiw" title="w:en:Siraj Fegessa">en</a>) laten weten. Het besluit zal naar verwachting binnen twee weken door het parlement worden geratificeerd. De Ethiopische ministerraad heeft besloten dat het instellen van de noodtoestand een noodzakelijke maatregel is om "de constitutionele orde in het land te herstellen". In Ethiopië wordt al jaren gedemonstreerd tegen de regering, onder meer vanwege het onteigenen van landbouwgronden. Daarbij zijn al honderden doden gevallen, met name in de regio's <a href="https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oromia_(regio)" class="extiw" title="w:Oromia (regio)">Oromia</a> en <a href="https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amhara_(regio)" class="extiw" title="w:Amhara (regio)">Amhara</a> in 2015 en 2016. Premier <a href="https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haile_Mariam_Desalegne" class="extiw" title="w:Haile Mariam Desalegne">Haile Mariam Desalegne</a> trad afgelopen donderdag af naar aanleiding van de aanhoudende onrust, en dit vormde de rechtstreekse aanleiding voor het uitroepen van de huidige noodtoestand.
</p><p>De <a href="https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verenigde_Staten" class="extiw" title="w:Verenigde Staten">Verenigde Staten</a> hebben kritiek op het besluit om de noodtoestand uit te roepen. De vrijheid zou er onnodig door worden ingeperkt, heeft de Amerikaanse ambassade in <a href="https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Addis_Abeba" class="extiw" title="w:Addis Abeba">Addis Abeba</a> laten weten.
